A Canadian charter and intermodal transshipment company awards a contract to a Croatian shipyard for the construction of a ship.

The Croatian shipyard is faced with the material impossibility of completing the construction of the ship due to major financial problems. The Canadian company turns to us for help and guidance, and to intervene with the Croatian government to prevent the shipyard from defaulting under the agreement or going bankrupt, and hence losing the ship altogether.

Consequently, we accompanied the president and his staff to Croatia, and we engaged in discussions with the Croatian government to find a solution.

We communicated with the Canadian Ambassador to assess the situation, met with the minister of Foreign Affairs, the Industry minister, and the Croatian authorities.

A Successful Outcome

The Croatian Government provided additional funding to avoid the shipyard’s immediate bankruptcy; construction of the ship resumed.

As soon as seaworthiness was established, the Canadian company purchased the ship via a transaction with the Croatian government and the shipyard. This prevented the ship from being mired in administrative and legal bureaucracy for up to 24 months.

The agreement allowed the Canadian company to take possession of the ship and tow it into international waters, then to a shipyard in Italy to complete its construction.
